Chateau de Montfaucon

Located on a steep hill overlooking the town of Montfaucon, this domaine is just south of Orange, near the fabled vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Another small family affair, winemaker Rodolphe de Pins is making fantastic wines that are wonderfully pure, balanced, and easy to drink, either with food or alone. After training in Australia and California as well as the Chateauneuf region, Rodolphe has taken his skills to the town of Montfaucon. There, he is crafting lovely wines with great personalities, sourcing the grapes from well-drained and ideal sites.

Wines

Les Gardettes (50% Syrah, 20% Cinsault, 20% Carignan, 10% Mourvedre) is named after the two towers which protect the entry to the château. This red fruit-oriented wine is made from young vines, completely destemmed and allowed to macerate for 10 days, then aged in cuvées to maintain the freshness, which opens the door to some surprisingly complex flavors. It is a pleasant and straightforward wine for everyday cuisine.

Le Viognier Vin du Pays d’Oc (100% Viognier), a very limited production, is a beautiful expression of Viognier. Whole clusters are fully pressed then fermented in a mix of cuvees and oak barrels, then left on the lees in barrels for 10 months. It exhibits floral notes with hints of oak, with a vivacious freshness and nice acidity to balance the fat, dense mouthfeel. Its complexity continues with aromas of dry fruits (apricot, peach, orange and honey), as well as some nutty notes. It ends with elegant tannins and a surprisingly long finish.
